About me

Hello, I’m Linda Brown, the founder of pcosinspiration.com.

My PCOS Journey: A Path to Understanding and Managing Your Health

When I was 19, I first began to suspect something wasn’t quite right with my health. My periods had always been irregular, but I assumed that was normal for a teenager. However, as I entered college, new symptoms started to appear. I gained weight rapidly without changing my diet or exercise habits. My skin, which had been relatively clear throughout high school, suddenly broke out in stubborn acne. To top it off, I noticed dark, coarse hair growing on my chin and upper lip.

At first, I tried to ignore these changes, attributing them to stress and the challenges of transitioning to college life. But when I went six months without a period, I knew it was time to seek medical advice. I visited a gynecologist who listened to my symptoms and ordered some blood tests and an ultrasound. Two weeks later, I received my diagnosis: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).

The Emotional Impact of a PCOS Diagnosis

Receiving the diagnosis brought a mix of emotions. I felt relieved to finally have an explanation for my symptoms, but also fearful about what this meant for my future. Confusion set in as I tried to figure out how to move forward. The doctor prescribed birth control pills to regulate my periods and metformin to help with insulin resistance. She also advised me to lose weight but didn’t offer much guidance on how to do so, especially given the challenges of PCOS.

The Struggle to Manage PCOS

Over the next few years, I struggled to manage my symptoms. The birth control helped regulate my periods, but I continued to battle acne, hirsutism, and weight gain. I tried countless diets, hoping to find one that would work long-term, but nothing seemed effective. I often felt frustrated and alone, as if my body was working against me.

A Turning Point: Holistic Treatment and Empowerment

The turning point in my journey came when I found an endocrinologist who specialized in PCOS. She took a more holistic approach to treatment, focusing on how PCOS affects the entire body. Rather than just prescribing medication, she helped me understand the condition on a deeper level. Together, we developed a management plan that included:

  • A low glycemic index diet to help manage insulin resistance
  • Regular exercise with a mix of cardio and strength training
  • Supplements like inositol and vitamin D to support overall health
  • Stress management techniques such as meditation and yoga

This wasn’t an overnight transformation, but gradually, I started to see improvements. My periods became more regular, my acne cleared up, and I was able to maintain a healthy weight. Most importantly, I felt like I had regained control over my health.

The Lessons of My PCOS Journey

My journey with PCOS hasn’t been easy, and I still have challenging days. But this experience has taught me so much about resilience, self-advocacy, and the importance of approaching health holistically. It’s also ignited a passion in me to help other women out with PCOS, which is why I started this website.
